While many stories are quite predictable, “The Eyes of Horace Hollow” includes a refreshing amount of twists and turns. Such a delightful and mysterious narrative that left me reflecting well beyond the close of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from a college writing teacher & avid reader

I read this book in one day because the plot line and character development were entrancing and beautiful in the simplicity of the language. The story alternates between slow moments and quick plot movements, and the characters are complex and likeable. I appreciate writers who don't use fancy words to sound smart, and the writer's language is so true to the story that I hardly noticed it. Finally, though the ending was "happy," it wasn't trite. I highly recommend this read.

Nancy Hartmann has written a fascinating tale about a talented man who has lived a lonely, sad life. Jasper Yates is a gifted stain glass artist whose work is admired but isn’t selling enough to support him in a comfortable way. He has no family or friends, and he longs to have people see beyond his physical flaws. When a magical solution is offered by a mysterious figure, he jumps at the chance without considering the possible outcome. As you read the story, you become interested in Jasper and the other characters and what their futures will hold. Can Jasper have the life he’s always wished for without having to give in to the demands of the mysterious figure in the woods? The characters, the tale, the twists and turns will make you want to keep reading until you have the answers!

This is a great story. I loved all the characters including Noir the helpful one eyed cat. The author really made the village of Horace Hollow come alive for me. Fans of Diane Setterfields novel, Once Upon A River would RELLY enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delight to Read

This book takes a different look at time and what it means to lose it or use it. It has tones of loneliness and bullying. The characters are well developed and relatable. This story reads a little bit like folklore or a fairy tale. It reminds me of something that you might read by Neil Gaiman. There's magic, a bit of intrigue, romance, and a moral. This was a delight to read.

I liked the characters in Nancy's story; I thought they were relatable. The story felt like a folk tale with a new and interesting plot. The stained-glass craft was interesting as well, as it was incorporated into the story.

Liked this book. Short, easy read. Entertaining.
edit: I read this on my own, now my book club is reading it. There's actually a lot to talk about for a short book. It is original in concept, full of twist, good character development. I am a fan of moral ambiguity in characters: this book is full of that. I want to root for Horace because he is so alone, but what do the choices he makes say about him? Is he a good person?
